Why Does Pregnancy Cause Morning Sickness?

Electrolytes, primarily sodium, potassium and chloride, regulate fluid balance, nerve signalling and muscle function throughout the body. Repeated vomiting depletes these minerals faster than they can be replaced through food and water alone, which can lead to dehydration and, in more severe cases, contribute to the electrolyte and fluid disturbances seen in Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG). Clinical literature on HG consistently identifies electrolyte and fluid replacement as a core part of managing moderate to severe nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, alongside dietary and medical support. This is part of why hydration-focused, electrolyte-based support has become a common recommendation for women experiencing frequent morning sickness, it addresses a real physiological loss, not just the symptom of feeling unwell.

Is Ginger Safe and Effective for Morning Sickness?

Ginger is one of the most studied natural remedies for nausea and vomiting of pregnancy. A 2014 meta-analysis published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine pooled multiple randomized controlled trials and found ginger supplementation was associated with a reduction in nausea severity compared with placebo. Earlier systematic reviews and RCTs, including a widely cited 2004 trial, report similar findings. Researchers believe ginger's bioactive compounds (gingerols and shogaols) may influence gastric motility and interact with pathways involved in the nausea response, though the exact mechanism is still being studied.

On safety, existing reviews generally regard ginger as well-tolerated in pregnancy at the doses used in most clinical trials (commonly around 1g per day, in divided doses). Evidence on higher doses is more limited, which is why it's worth discussing ginger supplementation with a midwife, GP or obstetrician, particularly in early pregnancy.
